ALBRIGHTON & DISTRICT

CIVIC SOCIETY

(Albrighton, Boningale, Donington-with-Boscobel & Tong)

Garden/Flower Competition

We were grateful to John Bulmer who led the judging panel round the villages and chose the winners of the Best Hanging Basket/Container, the Best Window Box and the Best Front Garden. The Bulmer Cup for best overall winner and Certificates for the best in each class will be presented at the AGM/Public Meeting in the Red House on 11th October.

Thank you to everyone who has made such a great effort with their flower displays which enhance all four villages and make a good impression to visitors and cheers up the whole community – especially after the year we have had.

Potholes

We have seen that many potholes in Station Rd have been patched and for that we are grateful. However there are still some rather deep ones in the High Street and the surface of some parts of Cross Road is awful. The 3m long x 2m wide depression in the road surface of Station Road near No. 56 which allows water to gather, then be splashed onto the adjacent footpath and where, last winter, it then froze to black ice and caused a lady to fall and break her hip is still not dealt with – even though a pothole within the depression has been filled! This has been reported to SC and a technician came out to log it but still no action. We will continue our pressure on SC.

Lottery campaign for more subscribers

By the time you read this the Swim Albrighton – Swim Safe Event on the village green on 24th July will have been held. This was the initiative of the Friends of Albrighton Swimming Pool Lottery (FASPL) and the Swimming Club who invited the Civic Society & other organisations to join in. Thanks to all who supported all these voluntary groups.

Whiteacres Development (also known as East of Garridge Close Development)

This Planning Application supported by Shropshire Council Planning Officers was refused at the SC Planning Committee on 25th June after Albrighton objections with the main reasons for refusal: Non compliance with SC Site Allocations and Management of Development (SAMDev) Adopted Plan (December 2015) and Site ALB002a in the Albrighton Neighbourhood Plan (ANP) 'Light'(June 2013)) which was for “ largely comprise appropriate housing for occupation by people of retirement age” and also “likely to result in an unacceptable increase in the level of traffic on Garridge Close, as a result of the deviation from the envisaged type of housing”.
